Heart Failure Surgery: What We Can Do Now In The Philippines

The Philippines is home to a growing population of more than 100 million people. The majority younger than 65 years, but among these have high prevalence rates of hypertension, diabetes, tobacco smoking, physical inactivity which have led to high rates of premature deaths from non-communicable diseases. The top among these is heart failure. This talk is about the surgical treatments for heart failure and the treatments that are available now in the Philippines.

About the Speaker

Dr. Ramon Diaz

Chief of the Section of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (TCVS), Makati Medical Center

Dr. Ramon Diaz was nine years old when he witnessed his father suffer a heart attack one night after dinner. He next saw his dad two months later, during which his dad was flown to Houston and undergone quadruple bypass surgery by the legendary Dr. Denton Cooley at Texas Heart Institute. 

This inspired Dr. Diaz to pursue this profession, for which he trained at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he was the first Asian to be awarded the Rene Favoloro Award for Outstanding Fellow. He came back to the Philippines in 2000, and has been in practice at various hospitals in Metro Manila.  He is presently the Chief of the Section of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (TCVS) at Makati Medical Center.

Dr. Martin Manahan

Dr. Martin Manahan comes from a family of distinguished Obstetrician & Gynecologists who have been practicing Obstetrics & Gynecology since 1945.
