About the Speaker

Mr. David Schnier

Counselor for Economic Affairs, US Embassy Manila

Dave Schnier is a career diplomat with the United States Department of State.  Since August 2014 he has served as the Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Manila, having previously served in the same position in Lima, Peru.  

Prior to his Lima assignment Dave was Special Assistant to Under Secretary of State Bill Burns, and before that served on detail in the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon.

Earlier in his career Dave served as Senior Brazil Desk Officer, and as Staff Aide to Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Thomas A. Shannon.  He has also served at the United States Embassies in Morocco and Ghana.

Before joining the State Department Dave was an International Trade Specialist at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington DC.  From 1991 to 1995 he was a journalist in Santiago, Chile, and a teacher in Bogotá, Colombia.

Dave holds a Master’s Degree in International Development from the George Washington University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from Pomona College in Claremont, California.  He speaks Spanish and French, in addition to his native English.
